Books Allison Day, the Youth and Family Programs Manager at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, presented a workshop session highlighting ways to bring picture and story books together with artwork to make your story hours a richer experience. | Visual Thinking Strategies
(VTS) Erica Wall, the MFA's Head of School Programs, presented a session introducing the basics of VTS, a technique that uses visual arts to help develop critical analytical skills. Here are some links to additional sources of information about VTS and example of VTS: Visual Understanding in Education: This website introduces the research of Abigail Housen and others, linking the VUE concept with a comprehensive overview of uses of VTS and the development of VTS theory and practice. http://www.vue.org/ Art Safari: The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) has developed this fun interactive web site using VTS to encourage kids to write and save their own stories about art works. http://artsafari.moma.org Visual Thinking Strategies: Slavery in the United States (Mark Foley's EdPsych 490 Major Project.) Mark Foley, an educator from Urbana Middle School in Illinois, conducted this interactive research project in the summer of 2001. While the data collection stage of his project is over and the results have been documented, his interactive web site is still live and presents a deeply thought-provoking, participatory experience with actual VTS method.
