Boston Regional
Advisory Council
The Boston Regional
Advisory Council represents member libraries and their users in the Boston
Regional Library System. Its purpose is to advise the Boston Public Library in
its development, implementation, and evaluation of the Boston Region Plan of
Service, which defines the manner in which the Region's mission and goals will
be carried out.
Composition of the Advisory
Council
The Boston Regional Advisory Council
is composed of ten members:
- two academic library members
- two school library members
- two special library members
- two public library members
- one at-large member
- one lay user member
A Chair will be elected annually by
the Council members.
The Administrator of the Boston
Region and the President of the Boston Public Library, or delegate, will serve
as ex-officio members of the Council.
The Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners will designate a liaison to the Council.
Selection and Term of Advisory
Council Members
Council members representing
constituent library groups serve two-year staggered terms; Council members
serving at-large and representing lay users will serve two-year staggered
terms. No Council member may serve for more than two consecutive terms. Terms
are on a calendar year basis.
Each year, current constituent Council
members will nominate at least one candidate for the succeeding term; at least
one candidate will be nominated by a consensus of all current Council members
for the at-large or lay user seat to be filled in the succeeding term. These
nominations will be presented at the Region's annual meeting of member
libraries at which time additional nominations may be put forward by member
libraries. Each member library will have one vote to determine the nominees
appointed to the Council.
Meetings
The Advisory Council will meet
quarterly each year. Additional meetings may be scheduled at the discretion of
the Council Chair in consultation with the Administrator of the Boston Region.
An annual meeting of all member libraries will be held in the fall of each year
for the purpose of appointing Council members and reporting to the membership
on the Regional Plan of Service.
