The BPL Compass

Boston Public Library and the Tierney Learning Center

by Christine Schonhart

In 2012, when the Washington Village branch had to close to prepare for new housing in the Old Colony Housing Development, the Boston Public LIbrary had a unique opportunity to provide library services in the new Tierney Learning Center just one block away from the former branch. Through the efforts of outreach librarians and staff from Beacon Communities, the library has provided hundreds of programs over the past three years, including bike maintenance, summer reading programs, Read Your Way to Fenway, baby yoga, story time, computer training, and out-of-school time programs for kids and teens.

Under the leadership of Beacon Communities, programs offered by community organizations have grown exponentially. In addition to the BPL, the Tierney Learning Center hosts programs by the Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, Head Start, AES World Languages and Culture Institute among many others. BPL staff will continue to offer library programs most in demand – and our librarian’s reputation for great programs has spread throughout South Boston, with requests to have BPL library services at a number of organizations.

In the coming months, similar programs will be taken to more community locations including community centers,  Thrive in 5, Childhood Literacy Project, neighborhood pre-schools, elementary and high schools, Head Start programs, health centers and housing developments.
