Boston Circa 1918 - A virtual exhibit

What did Boston look like the last time the Red Sox were World Series Champs? Well, the West End was intact, Boston was America's fifth largest city, the Franklin Park Zoo had just been completed, postage cost $.03/ounce, Charlie Chaplin was a popular movie character and Calvin Coolidge was the governor. Women did not yet have the right to vote, Babe Ruth was still a member of the Boston Red Sox, Hyde Park had not yet become part of the City of Boston, F. Scott Fitzgerald had not yet published his first book and prohibition was just around the corner. But most of all the Sox had won bested their rivals again and no one knew it would be 86 years before that would happen again.

This virtual exhibit shows scenes around Boston from 1915 through 1920. These images are from collections in the Print Department at the Boston Public Library. Just follow the arrows to browse through the exhibit. Enjoy and

Congratulations to the Red Sox - Well Done!
