• What is BPL Big Dig?
BPL Big Dig is an online research tool, powered by Webfeat,
that allows you to search many of the library's licensed database
products at one time. The tool includes nearly all the subscription
databases that the library offers both in house and remotely.
• Why isn't every product/database
available online included in BPL Big Dig?
Some databases like LearnATest rely on a browsing interface where
there is no search function. Databases like this cannot be integrated
into WebFeat's BPL Big Dig interface and cannot be included.
Direct access to all electronic resource databases is available
by selecting databases individually from the alphabetical listing
page as well the subject pages.
• How do I search for images only?
On the advanced search page, you can search for images only by placing
a check in the 'image only' box. Only resources that include pictures
will appear in the search results.
• How do I search for full-text only?
On the advanced search page, place a check in the 'full text' box
and only full-text articles and books will appear in the search
results.
• Why do the products appear in a different
order after each search?
Since BPL Big Dig pulls results from multiple databases at
the same time, the database that returns the results fastest for
that particular search will appear at the top. This will vary from
one BPL Big Dig search to the next.
• Can I search for an exact phrase?
There is no perfect method for exact phrase searching in BPL
Big Dig since different databases have different parameters.
However, using "Quotation Marks" around your search term
will help limit most results to exact phrase.
• How do I search business or health
topics?
On the entry page, click on the appropriate subject listing, then
you may search all of the selected database at once by clicking
the Select/Deselect All box, or you may customize your search by
selecting one or more of the listed resources.
• Where can I find a database I used to
use?
Underneath the BPL Big Dig quick search option, there are
links for subject groupings or an alphabetical listing of all the
databases. In both listings there are individual links to use to
go directly to the database without using the BPL Big Dig search.
• Why do some databases have more results
then others?
The number of results that appear under each database heading is
governed by the individual database itself. Some databases may show
10 results, other 25, etc. However, you can always get to the next
results set by clicking on "Next Set"
• Why do I need to enter my BPL library
card number to see the results in BPL Big Dig?
If you are using BPL Big Dig inside one of our locations
you do not need to enter your BPL library card number. If you are
using BPL Big Dig from your school, home or office you need
to enter your BPL library card number because our license agreements
with the database vendors require that these products are for BPL
card holders. There are exceptions, you do not need to enter your
library card number to view the online catalog, the Digital Image
Gallery and the Obituary Database which are BPL products.
• I'm not seeing any results when
I do search using BPL Big Dig?
To view results in BPL Big Dig it is recommended that you use Internet
Explorer 5.0 or greater. If you are unable to view results from
BPL Big Dig, you can search the database product directly
and still get results.
• How can I tell what database my result
is from?
Look for information at the end of the article, such as copyright.
When you have printed your article or you are finished viewing it,
close it to return to the results list. Find the title of the article/image
you were viewing (it might still be highlighted), and see what database
the results are listed under.
