Boston Public Library ESL (English as a Second Language) Programs

The Boston Public Library provides "ESL Conversation Group" sessions at various times and in various locations. The schedule of Conversation Group times and locations is updated regularly.

The Dudley Branch of the Boston Public Library houses the Dudley Literacy Center (617-442-6186), which is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10am to 6p.m., and Thursdays, 12pm to 8p.m. The Dudley Literacy Center offers Reading Discussion Groups, Writing Process Groups, Computer Literacy Skills classes, and Introductions to the Internet as well as a collection of books, audiotapes, and videotapes to serve the adult literacy community.

The Central Library and some neighborhood branches also have collections of literacy materials which can be taken out of the library. These materials include books, audiotapes, and videotapes, and can be found in the Circulating/Take Home Collection Catalog.

Massachusetts Literacy Organizations

  • Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline: c/o SABES, World Education, 44 Farnsworth St, Boston, MA 02111; 1-800-447-8844. They have a complete and up-to-date list of adult basic education, adult secondary education, and adult English language classes in Massachusetts.
  • Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council: 400 High Street, Medford, MA 02155; (781) 395-2374, (781) 395-3281 fax. EMLC is a private non-profit affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide, the largest nonprofit volunteer adult literacy organization in the world.
  • Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts: 15 Court Square-Suite 540, Boston, MA 02108; (617) 367-1313. Affiliated with Literacy Volunteers of America.
  • Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners: 648 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02215; (617) 267-9400 or 1-800-952-7403. Although this branch of the state government is not primarily a literacy organization, they may also be able to help direct people towards literacy programs.
  • SABES: The System for Adult Basic Education Support, this organization was established to support literacy programming in Massachusetts. ALRI is a regional branch of SABES for the Boston area.
