Why use this database?
To find biographies of artists, architects, patrons of art, collectors,
dealers, writers and scholars, as well as information and facts
on art of various time periods and geographic areas, and on the
various forms of art, art movements, and styles.
Description: Contains 45,000 articles on the visual arts
- painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts
and photography - from prehistory to the present day with linked
images, including access to the Bridgeman Art Library, and links
to other sites (museums, galleries, etc.) Entries contain bibliographical
references for further study and cross-references within articles
lead to related information..
Coverage: entire text of THE DICTIONARY OF ART (Grove, 1996,
34 vols.) with quarterly additions of new material and updates to
the text

Searching
There are eight search screens; Full Text, Biographies, Bibliographies,
Contributors, Captions, External Image Links, Browse, and Bridgeman.
Full Text Search
Search the entire text of the dictionary for every mention of a
term.
- Type a word or words in the search box.
- Choose the search mode:
Concept -A search on "state" will also match "province",
"country" and "land".
Pattern - A search on "apollodorus" will also match "apollodoros".
Boolean - Search using the Boolean operators
- Click SEARCH.
Biographies Search
Searches only the biographical entries.
- Type a word(s) in one or more search box- Birth Date, Birth
Place, Death Date, Death Place, Nationality, Occupation.
- Click SEARCH.
Bibliographies Search
Searches only the bibliography entries.
- Type a word or words in the search box.
- Click SEARCH.
Contributors Search
Searches for entries written by the specified contributor.
- Type the contributor's name in the search box.
- Click SEARCH.
Captions Search
Search for words in figure captions in the dictionary.
- Type a word or words in the search box.
- Click SEARCH.
External Image Links Search
Search images in external web sites relevant to articles featured
in groveart.com.
- Type a word(s) in one or more search box - Artists Name, Title
of Work, Date, Location of Work.
- Click SEARCH.
Browse Searching
Browse articles, contributors, appendices or the index alphabetically.
- Choose the appropriate browse mode.
- Click a letter of the alphabet to begin browsing.
- Use the white arrow keys in the upper right corner to move through
the entries.
- Click on an entry to go to the article.
Bridgeman Search
This search takes you to the Bridgeman Art Library of fine art images.
- You can do a simple (keyword) search - fill in a word(s) in
the search box and click SEARCH.
- Or create an advanced search by filling a word(s) in one or
more search box - artist, title, nationality, item number, etc.
and click SEARCH.
- When the images appear, click on the desire image to see a larger
version and to see the image description.
- Move the mouse to the upper left of the image and you can click
button on the toolbar that appears to download, print or email
the image.
- Click BACK to move back to the search results.
- To leave the Bridgeman site click the groveart button.
Using the Boolean Operators
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: hispanic or latino
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: doctor and surgeon
Use NOT to eliminate separate concepts. NOT narrows your
search.
Example: kennedy not politician
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search
term, or multiple characters within a search term.
Examples: drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
m*donald (retrieves mcdonald and macdonald)
Use ? to replace one character within a search term.
Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)
[ ] matches any single character from within the brackets.
Examples: Sm[iy]th (will find Smith or Smyth)
199[0-9] (will match dates from 1990 to 1999)
~ preceding a search term matches words that sound alike
Example: ~mikelanjelo will find Michelangelo
Proximity Searching
Use adj# to find terms within a specified number(#) of words
of each other and in any order.
Example: white adj2 constance (retrieves White, Helen Constance;
or Glenn, Constance White)
Displaying Search Results
Search results are displayed in citation format.
- Use the scroll bar to move through the list.
- Click a citation author to display the record.
- Click on PREVIOUS or NEXT to move through the
results.
- Use the scroll bar to move through the record.
- Click on links to the left of the record to go to related information.
- Click on SEARCH RESULTS to return to the list of results.
Printing Search Results
- When the record is on the screen, go to the FILE MENU
and select PRINT PREVIEW.
- Make sure the pages are what you want. If you are using this
database within a BPL location there is a charge for computer
printing.
- Click PRINT
- Click PRINT on the printer menu.
- The print screen will close and you will return to the record.

Emailing Search Results

Beginning a New Search
- Click Home on the Grove toolbar or Advanced Search.
Exiting
Click on Home at the top of the screen to return to the Boston
Public Library Web site.
