Description: Includes the full text of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd edition, the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, 2nd edition. Provides links to relevant websites.
Coverage: New Grove, 2001, 29 vols. with updates, New Grove Opera 1992, 4 vols, and New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, 2002, 3 vols.

Searching

Full Text Search
Search the entire text of the dictionary for every mention of a term.

  1. Type a word or words in the search box.
  2. Choose the search mode:

  3. Concept -A search on "state" will also match "province", "country" and "land".
    Pattern - A search on "apollodorus" will also match "apollodoros".
    Boolean - Search using the Boolean operators
  4. Click SEARCH.

Biographies Search
Searches only the biographical entries.

  1. Type a word(s) in one or more search box- Birth Date, Birth Place, Death Date, Death Place, Nationality, Occupation.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Bibliographies Search
Searches only the bibliography entries.

  1. Type a word or words in the search box.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Contributors Search
Searches for entries written by the specified contributor.

  1. Type the contributor's name in the search box.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Links Search
Search images in external web sites relevant to articles featured in grovemusic.com.

  1. Type a word or words in the search box.
  2. Chhose a link type - all, images, sound files, etc.
  3. Click SEARCH.

Works-Lists Search
Restricts the search to works-lists.

  1. Type a word or words in the search box.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Browse Searching
Browse articles, contributors, appendices or the index alphabetically.

  1. Choose the appropriate browse mode.
  2. Click a letter of the alphabet to begin browsing.
  3. Use the white arrow keys in the upper right corner to move through the entries.
  4. Click on an entry to go to the article.

Explore Features
Browse specific categories of information that Grovemusic has put together.

  1. Biographies – Choose a category, then continue to select from the lists of dates/topics to get to the desired article.
  2. Research Resources – click on the links within the described research resource to go to the article.

Special Features
Links to special features of the database.

  1. Listening to Grove – describes how Grove is adding sound with a partnership with Sibelius, a music software developer. It also states where to go to get the free plug-in. NOTE: If you are using a library computer you will not be able to download anything to the computer’s hard drive.
  2. Guide to Sibelius – Choose a category, then continue to select from the lists of topics to get to the desired sound file
  3. All Features – Has a list of special feature articles that change occasionally. Click on the article title to read it .

Using the Boolean Operators

Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: hispanic or latino

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: doctor and surgeon

Use NOT to eliminate separate concepts. NOT narrows your search.
Example:
kennedy not politician

Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term, or multiple characters within a search term.
Examples: drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
m*donald (retrieves mcdonald and macdonald)

Use ? to replace one character within a search term.
Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)

[ ] matches any single character from within the brackets.
Examples: Sm[iy]th (will find Smith or Smyth)
199[0-9] (will match dates from 1990 to 1999)

~ preceding a search term matches words that sound alike
Example: ~mikelanjelo will find Michelangelo

Proximity Searching

Use adj# to find terms within a specified number(#) of words of each other and in any order.
Example: white adj2 constance (retrieves White, Helen Constance; or Glenn, Constance White)

Displaying Search Results
Search results are displayed in citation format.

  1. Use the scroll bar to move through the list.
  2. Click a citation author to display the record.
  3. Click on PREVIOUS or NEXT to move through the results.
  4. Use the scroll bar to move through the record.
  5. Click on links to the left of the record to go to related information.
  6. Click on SEARCH RESULTS to return to the list of results.

Printing Search Results

  1. When the record is on the screen, go to the FILE MENU and select PRINT PREVIEW.
  2. Make sure the pages showing in PRINT PREVIEW are what you want. If you are using this database within a BPL location there is a charge for computer printing.
  3. Click PRINT
  4. Click PRINT on the printer menu.
  5. The print screen will close and you will return to the record.
