We have pulled together
access points to help you locate information.
Catalogs
To
locate our catalogs, click on the "BPL Catalogs" box at the top of
the page. Currently, we have several different catalogs. The Library
has over a million books, videos, cds, etc. that patrons may take
home.
The Boston Public Library has over six
million books for in-library research, along with over 20,000 journals,
hundreds of thousands of maps, musical scores, photographs, millions
of patents, rare books, manuscripts, etc. About 2 million of the research
books are listed in this electronic catalog. You will also find a
few of our periodicals, CD Roms, etc. listed here.
Please
check with us if you don't find what you want in the electronic
catalog. The older books and other research materials cannot be searched
electronically, but we will gladly assist
you in locating these.

Electronic Resources
Electronic resources
(many of them databases) include magazines, journals and periodicals
(full text and/or abstracts) reference books, directories and business
resources, encyclopedias, etc. Some of these are available from
home. Home use usually requires that you enter your library card
number. Unless otherwise indicated in the resource description it
is available remotely.
To identify an electronic resource to use, you may do any of the
following:
- Use the search
field to enter terms for the BPL Big Dig to search our
recommended databases, or
- Scroll through
the subject list and click on the one you want, you may then search
all resouces in that category at once with the BPL Big Dig,
or
- Scroll down to
the alphabetical list of the resources and click on the letter
you want. You may then choose to search several databases at once,
or select them individually.

Links by Subject
We have many subjects with links to
help you locate information. Each subject usually has the following
components:
1) Internet sites - that take you directly to Web pages with information
on the subject. These pages have been selected by reference librarians
as links we have found useful and reliable. We don't ordinarily link
to pages that require you to register or subscribe.
2) The Boston Public Libary catalogs - so you can search for more
materials to take home. You can place a reserve on take home materials
so they are ready for you to pick up when you get here. Our research
and reference materials remain in the building.
We have over a million items (books,
videos, CDs, etc.) that circulate (may be taken home). We have over
six million books for in-building research, over 20,000 journals,
hundreds of thousands of maps, musical scores, photographs, millions
of patents, rare books, etc. Our electronic book collection is also
linked here.
NOTE: in our Research Catalog, we currently only have about 2 million
of the resarch books listed. The other books and research materials
are not currently in an electronic catalog. We will
assist you in locating these.
3) Subscription databases - these are some of the databases the Library
subscribes to that cover the topic. Many of these are available for
use from home. If you use them from home, you will usually be asked
to enter your library card number. (This is a contract obligation
with our vendors.) Library cards are free and may be obtained at any
of our locations.
Some of the databases are consortia
subscriptions - this means that any patron that has a library card
from that consortia/network should be able to use the databases. Therefore,
many Massachusetts library cards will work for these databases. If
yours doesn't, check with your town/city library to see if they have
access another way.
4) Specialized reference departments - we have many specialized reference
departments staffed by professional librarians that hold masters degrees
in library science, some also with post graduate degrees in various
subject areas. In each subject section, we have identified which departments
will be appropriate to assist with further information. The Library
also provides reference over the telephone (617-536-5400), via U.S.
mail, electronic request form and
email. Do not hesitate to contact us for additional information
and guidance.
5) Additional Internet Pathfinders - Pathfinders are Internet sites
that do not take you directly to Web pages with the detailed information
on a subject. Instead, they will walk you through a menu of options
(or paths) to help you locate more detailed information on the subject.
The pathfinders we have included are from sites where the groups managing
the pathfinders work to keep them up-to-date.
Please remember - These links do not
represent all the resources the Library has or can help you with.
If you do not find what you want, please
contact us.
