Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, located roughly halfway between Venice and Milan. Formed at the end of the last ice age by glacial activity, the lake is ringed by steep surrounding mountains that funnel strong, steady winds down toward the bright blue water, perfect for powering sailboats such as the beautiful vessel pictured in this poster. The area is also home to plentiful olive and lemon orchards.
Artist Giuseppe Riccobaldi began his career as a stage designer for theater and film sets and was noted for his linear, sculptural designs. In Italy, he became best known as a cartellonista—a sign or poster painter— renowned for his advertising posters featuring streamlined cars, films, and enticing travel destinations.
