City in the Clouds
The view in this poster looks south on Michigan Avenue, past Grant Park, and features Chicago’s great skyscrapers. The peristyle, with its semicircular row of Doric columns, stood on Wrigley Square from 1917 until it was demolished in 1953. The site now houses Chicago’s new Millennium Park, and a dedication ceremony in October of 2002 unveiled a nearly full-sized replica in the same spot.
This poster was the first of more than one hundred Leslie Ragan created in his distinctive Art Deco style for the New York Central Railroad. In later posters, Ragan’s luminous clouds and dramatic cityscapes were replaced with billowing steam engulfing streamlined locomotives.
