In 2001, the Boston Public Library’s Print Department, under the guidance of Sinclair Hitchings, co-published Proof in Print, A Community of Printmaking Studios with Mixit Studios. The book outlined the connections between Artist’s Proof Studio and the studios it inspired: Mixit Print Studio, Artist Proof Studio in South Africa, and Hand Press.

The four-part 2012 exhibition reThink INK: 25 Years of Mixit Print Studio is a companion, ten years later, to that exhibition and book.  This collaborative exhibition—produced by the Boston Public Library and Mixit Print Studio—celebrates the studio’s 25th anniversary by featuring over 150 works by 71 artists.

Catherine Kernan, Give / Take (2011)reThink INK Portfolio: A Collaboration

The reThink INK Portfolio is a collaborative project created for this exhibition. The boxed set of 66 prints will enter the collection of the Boston Public Library to accompany Mixit Print Studio’s Proof in Print project (2001). These prints exemplify the variety and inventiveness of contemporary printmaking taking place in the Boston area.

KENT VIENOT, Flag of My Youth (2008)25 Years: A Juried Selection

Thousands of prints have rolled through the presses of Mixit Print Studio in the last quarter century. To contextualize the exhibition, Karen Shafts, Assistant Keeper of Prints at the Boston Public Library, selected 44 prints by artists who worked at Mixit Print Studio throughout its history. They comprise an extraordinary variety of technical virtuosity and conceptual complexity.  To learn more, read Ms. Shaft’s juror’s statement.

ILANA MANOLSON, Terra Flow (2012) Installations: Challenging Tradition

Printmaking artists are dramatically expanding the medium to encompass new multi-dimensional projects that cross the boundaries between media.
