The Boston Public Library Foundation is dedicated to helping the library realize its strategic vision outlined in the Compass: Principles for Excellence. In the coming years, we will be focusing on these key areas:
Children and Teens
The BPL fosters the love of reading and critical and creative thinking among children and teens from early literacy to mature readers. The foundation funds many of these programs and initiatives, including the BPL’s newest initiative Out-of-school Time, a monthly learning program that offers enrichment opportunities for children and teens outside the classroom. Learn more about that program here.
We are also in the first phases of a campaign to help the library enhance its Children’s Services, both in terms of its facilities and system-wide programming. If you would like to get involved in our Children’s Campaign, please call us at 617-247-8980, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Access and Innovation
We believe that “Free to All”—the motto inscribed above our front doors—does not simply mean not charging for the library’s services. It also means making the information and resources housed within the library as accessible and user-friendly as possible. The library is already a pioneer in digitization practices, making its stunning special collections accessible to not only library users, but people around the state and the country. With its new e-book lending system, it continues to innovate the way we access learning and information. We are dedicated to helping the library continue to innovate the way it shares and displays information, and to ensuring that technology is and continues to be free and accessible to all.
The BPL is committed to the ongoing development and preservation of its distinctive special collections, which provide citizens from all walks of life with access to their common cultural heritage. The foundation is helping by funding exhibitions and lecture series based around the cultural treasures based at the BPL.
The library is not just about books, but creating a space for readers and learners. We have a long history of helping the BPL preserve their buildings and facilities; the McKim restoration was the first project the foundation ever undertook. Today, we are continuing that work, and looking outward toward the future, through the building of new, beautiful spaces like the East Boston Branch, and helping improve the facilities of the landmark Johnson Building. If you’re interested in supporting the ongoing facilities improvements, please contact the foundation, or give a directed gift online.
