How Your Gifts Help

The Foundation's Logo

The Boston Public Library Foundation is dedicated to helping the library realize its strategic vision outlined in the Compass: Principles for Excellence.  In the coming years, we will focus on these key areas:

From Toddlers to Teens

The BPL fosters the love of reading and critical and creative thinking among children and teens from early literacy to mature readers. The Foundation funds many of these programs and initiatives, including the BPL’s Homework Help program– offering monthly enrichment opportunities for children and teens outside the classroom in everything from poetry, art, and music to STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). Toddlers can enjoy story times and music programs designed to engage them and foster a love of reading.  During the summer, Read Your Way to Fenway brings hundreds of kids to a Red Sox game and the BPL’s Summer Reading program extends learning all year round.

Cultural Enrichment

The BPL is committed to provide citizens from all walks of life with access to their common cultural heritage. The Foundation is proud to provide funding for the Lowell Lecture Series with the generous support of the Lowell Institute. These talks bring in local and national authors, educators, and thinkers to share their knowledge and discuss their expertise with the community. During the summer months, Concerts in the Courtyard, brings music to the historic McKim Building Courtyard of the Central Library free of charge. Click here to see the current season’s schedule.

Facilities Improvement

The library is not just about books, but also providing an inviting and stimulating space for readers and learners and for communities to gather. The Boston Public Library Foundation has a long history of helping the BPL preserve their buildings and facilities; the McKim restoration was the first project the foundation ever undertook. Today we are continuing that work, and looking outward toward the future, including the current renovations to the Central Library.

If you’re interested in supporting the ongoing facilities improvements, please contact the foundation, or give a directed gift online.
