On August 24th, over 500 children saw the Red Sox take on the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park as part of the annual Read Your Way to Fenway contest. Before the game, the six essay contest winners were presented their trophies on the field. Congratulations to again to Oliver, Cooper, Raymond, Jasmine, Kathleen, Joshua and all the other people who participated this year!
As the new school year approaches, children are finishing their summer reading, organizing newly purchased pencils and notebooks, and selecting first-day-of-school outfits. And all across the city, teachers are preparing lesson plans and readying their classrooms.
The Boston Public Library Foundation is getting ready for school, too—we are gearing up to support another year of Boston Public Library’s Homework Help program. This vital program provides consistent academic support and mentoring opportunities for K-8 students citywide. Unlike most other academic assistance programs in the city, Homework Help has no financial or registration barriers. It is a free, neighborhood-based, drop-in program that is open and accessible to all families throughout the school year. Thousands of elementary and middle-school students in Boston rely on Homework Help to receive much-needed academic enrichment and peer support.
Homework Help is fully funded by donations from generous individuals like you. Last year, your gift enabled more than 10,000 children to receive Homework Help at the Central Library and neighborhood branches. Read more »
The numbers are in and they are nothing short of amazing!
For 2013, 3.7 million people visited the Boston Public Library… and 7.8 more visits were made to the library’s website, www.bpl.org. They borrowed, viewed or downloaded 3.7 million books, movies, articles, and songs from a collection of 23 million, and they took part in more than 10,000 free programs, lectures, classes, and concerts.
These huge numbers emphasize how important your library is to the City of Boston and to the Commonwealth.
The Boston Public Library Foundation is dedicated to serving the cultural, educational, and informational needs of the public. With the support from individuals from you, the BPLF supports the library’s founding principle: that the resources available within the Boston Public Library are, and must always remain, free to all.
