Posted on December 15th, 2014 by Russell Hansen in Foundation

At the December 1st meeting of the Board of Directors of the Boston Public Library Foundation (BPLF), Jeff Hawkins was unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors.  In September, Ron O’Hanley announced that he would be stepping down after seven years as Chairman. Ron has served on the BPLF Board for twelve years, and he will remain on the BPLF Board to offer his assistance to Jeff and his fellow directors during the transition.Hawkins photo

Jeff Hawkins has served on the BPLF Board since 2004. He is currently Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Sankaty Advisors in Boston, an independently managed affiliate of Bain Capital, LLC.  Under Jeff’s leadership, the BPLF will continue to fulfill its mission of supporting the Boston Public Library and its Compass: Strategic Plan. Jeff’s experience and leadership will be vital to the BPLF and its Board as we work with the BPL during the ongoing Central Library renovations, and support programming and service needs at the Central Library and 24 branches.

“I have been a devoted user and supporter of the Boston Public Library for years and I am honored to now serve as Chairman of the Foundation. Boston Public Library has been an innovator since its founding in 1848 and it continues to have a profound impact on the City of Boston.  This is an exciting time in the life of BPL —from the renovation of the Johnson Building to expanding programming in the BPL’s 24 branches –and I look forward to being a part of it.”– Jeff Hawkins, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Boston Public Library Foundation

Posted on December 11th, 2014 by Russell Hansen in Foundation

Dear Friends,

The holiday season is a time to gather and give thanks for our good fortune and to look forward to a new year. Here at the Boston Public Library Foundation, we are grateful for the generosity that you and others have shown in supporting the programs featured in the snowflakes above. Your gifts make it possible for the library to share programs with people of all ages in every neighborhood of Boston, always free and open to the public.

None of this would be possible without you. Thank you!

Before we turn the calendar to 2015, please consider making a year-end donation to the Boston Public Library Foundation. Your gift will help us continue to support Boston Public Library programs throughout the City of Boston in the new year.

As the new school year approaches, children are finishing their summer reading, organizing newly purchased pencils and notebooks, and selecting first-day-of-school outfits. And all across the city, teachers are preparing lesson plans and readying their classrooms.

The Boston Public Library Foundation is getting ready for school, too—we are gearing up to support another year of Boston Public Library’s Homework Help program. This vital program provides consistent academic support and mentoring opportunities for K-8 students citywide. Unlike most other academic assistance programs in the city, Homework Help has no financial or registration barriers. It is a free, neighborhood-based, drop-in program that is open and accessible to all families throughout the school year. Thousands of elementary and middle-school students in Boston rely on Homework Help to receive much-needed academic enrichment and peer support.

Homework Help is fully funded by donations from generous individuals like you. Last year, your gift enabled more than 10,000 children to receive Homework Help at the Central Library and neighborhood branches. (more…)
