Genealogies and Family Histories

The Library attempts to collect, by purchase or gift, nearly all of the published genealogies of New England families or of families of New England origin.

The Social Sciences Reference Department maintains a separate catalog of family genealogies which includes analytics and vertical file materials not represented in the Research Library Catalog, although researchers are advised to refer to the Research Catalog for recently acquired titles. Materials are requested through the Book Delivery Desk, unless otherwise noted. BPL has digitized many pre-1923 titles in this collection . If a scanned copy is available,  it will appear in the library’s online catalog; you can read the digitized copy by clicking on the hyperlink embedded in the catalog record.

This collection of genealogies is supplemented by such titles as the Genealogy & Local History collection (Microtext Department), and electronic resources such as Ancestry: Library Edition (in-library use only).
