Alexandre Vattemare. On June 12, 2007 the Associates presented a preview of the upcoming exhibition, “The Extravagant Ambassador: Alexandre Vattemare.” Monsieur Vattemare was a French ventriloquist and the founding father of the Boston Public Library. A delegation from France attended the preview party, members of which included six descendents of M. Vattemare. The American and French curators, Earle Havens and Pierre-Alain Tilliette took the guests on a guided tour as they enjoyed Champagne (French, of course) and hors d’ oeuvres. |

Celebrate Joan! On April 5, 2006, the Associates and the Foundation of the Boston Public Library hosted an illustrated lecture and reception in honor of Joan of Arc. Deborah Fraioli, Guest Curator, spoke on her favorite “Joans” starting at 6 PM in the Edwin Austin Abbey Room. A reception followed in the Sargent Gallery. There were over 10,000 items relating to Saint Joan from the BPL’s vast collection, the largest outside Orleans, France (where Joan, the Maid of Orleans was born).
