Art & Architecture Lecture Series

Alexandre Vattemare. On June 12, 2007 the Associates presented a preview of the upcoming exhibition, “The Extravagant Ambassador: Alexandre Vattemare.” Monsieur Vattemare was a French ventriloquist and the founding father of the Boston Public Library. A delegation from France attended the preview party, members of which included six descendents of M. Vattemare. The American and French curators, Earle Havens and Pierre-Alain Tilliette took the guests on a guided tour as they enjoyed Champagne (French, of course) and hors d’ oeuvres.

John Adams Exhibition. On January 8, 2007, the Associates held a lively reception and curatorial tour of the current John Adams exhibition in the Changing Exhibits Room. Curator Beth Prindle gave an eloquent and anecdotal tour of the exhibition which was appreciated by all. The exhibition will be available during library hours until April 1.

Secular/Sacred. A spectacular exhibition of early manuscripts and artifacts was held at the McMullen Museum, Boston College in June of 2006. “Secular / Sacred, 11th – 16th Century works” was comprised of treasures from the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and a preview event for members was held at the BPL in the Rare Books Room. The Associates recently funded the repair of a 30-foot by 20-inch illuminated scroll on vellum, the centerpiece of the exhibition.

Celebrate Joan! On April 5, 2006, the Associates and the Foundation of the Boston Public Library hosted an illustrated lecture and reception in honor of Joan of Arc. Deborah Fraioli, Guest Curator, spoke on her favorite “Joans” starting at 6 PM in the Edwin Austin Abbey Room. A reception followed in the Sargent Gallery. There were over 10,000 items relating to Saint Joan from the BPL’s vast collection, the largest outside Orleans, France (where Joan, the Maid of Orleans was born).
