On October 16, 2002,
The Associates explored the art and language of film music in a
panel discussion, "So, What's The Score?" Panelists were
Bob Blumenthal, former jazz critic of the Boston Globe; Professor
Martin M. Marks of the Music and Theater Arts Department at MIT;
and Lloyd Schwartz, Pulitzer Prize-winning classical music critic
at The Boston Phoenix. Moderating the discussion was Alan Andres,
of World Media.
The panel was the
centerpiece of an evening paying tribute to the work of Victor Young,
an instrumentalist, orchestra leader and composer-arranger for vaudeville,
radio and film from the late 1920s through the mid-1950s. Though
best known for Around the World in 80 Days, Young composed
scores for more than 300 films and was nominated for more than 20
Academy Awards. The Boston Public Library's Music Department houses
an extensive collection of his work.
This event was a
first in a series of collaborative events to showcase the special
collections in the BPL's Music Department.
