Commercial Buildings of Boston – Past and Present

by Gregor Smart

buildings

Did you know our Boston Pictorial Archive holds photographs, prints, and drawings documenting Boston-area commercial buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries? The bulk of the material covers the years between 1855 and 1970 and offers views of banks, coffeehouses, stores and markets, taverns, and more.

For a look at buildings from today, two websites worth checking out:

redcheckEmporis
Detailed information on Boston buildings, the world’s 200 tallest buildings, and the USA’s top 20 buildings.

redcheckSkyscraperPage
Detailed information on Boston buildings, features skyscraper diagram illustrations, timeline chronologies, and a buildings database.

Both resources offer profiles on each building’s architectural style, architect, façade material, height, floors, and construction dates.
