Booklists for Kids

Jan Brett

(Booklist by Nancy Hurxthal)

Comet’s Nine Lives 1996
Comet, the cat who lives on Nantucket Island, has a series of adventures that use up eight of his nine lives. With colorful illustrations, this picture book offers a visual romp through gentle feline mishaps.

Daisy Comes Home 2002
The most docile of young Mei Mei’s six beloved hens is swept off in a basket down the Li River to a series of adventures. Rescued by Mei Mei, the hen is returned safely to her companions where she practices her new survival skills to win a higher place in the coop pecking order.

Gingerbread Baby 2003
A puckish gingerbread baby leads his legendary chase through an alpine village where he finds, through the cleverness of his owner, Matti, a happy confectionary ending.

The Hat 1997
A bevy of endearingly illustrated farmyard animals chide Hedgie, the little hedgehog, about a hat he acquires when a fallen stocking catches on his quills. Soon, as Hedgie points out the logic of his headgear, the other animals seek out their own chapeaux.

The Mitten 1989 32 pp.
In this Ukrainian folktale, a lost white mitten becomes a winter shelter for an unlikely cluster of woodland animals. When its owner, Nicki, retrieves his mitten, only its remarkable new size suggests its recent misadventures.

On Noah’s Ark 2003 32 pp.
Noah’s grandchild tells the story of the great flood and the cradle-like vessel that saves pairs of all the earth’s creatures. Intricate and colorful illustrations offer an array of fascinating details and create a charming atmosphere that remains even after the book has been closed.
