Dear Parents and Students:
We have selected the following list of books as summer reading
for the children entering Grade 1. Children coming into Grade
1 are not expected to read these books by themselves. The titles
suggested are for parents and children to read together.
The requirement is to read five books and five poems.
You may select the books from the Recommended Reading List. After
you read each selection, parents should record the title and author
on the Required Reading Book Log or Required Reading Poetry Log.
We also ask that parents sign the logs after each book and poem
is read.
Additionally, you are also required to complete the two book activities
included in this packet. Please select two books from those that
you have read, and complete one activity for each book. (Do not
use poetry selections.) The instructions for these activities are
written below.
Activity 1:
Create your own story map! Draw an illustration that shows what
happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Write a
sentence under each illustration that tells about the picture. Then
tape the story map together.
Activity 2:
Make a character web! Choose a favorite character from one of the
stories. Using the attached worksheet, draw a picture of your character
in the middle. Write five words that describe him/her in the other
spaces provided.
On the first day of school, please bring your Book Log, Poetry
Log and your two book activities with you. We hope that you
enjoy reading these excellent children's literature selections together.
Have a wonderful summer!
