SEVENTH GRADERS! When you arrive on the opening day of school in September, bring with you a PORTFOLIO or FOLDER OF YOUR OWN DESIGN which you can DISPLAY and SHARE with your schoolmates. This portfolio will be YOUR opportunity to INTRODUCE YOURSELF to your new classmates and teachers.

This portfolio should INCLUDE the following FIVE (5) components:

1. A TITLE PAGE with a PHOTO of yourself and a TABLE OF CONTENTS,
followed by . . .

2. A brief OUTLINE or LISTING of how you PLAN to organize your summer to
to include activities which will IMPROVE the HEALTH of your MIND, your
BODY, and your SPIRIT. This PLAN should be written and dated BEFORE
MID-JUNE and not be more than ¾ of a page in length.

3. A 1-2 PARAGRAPH SELF-EVALUATION written in LATE AUGUST that:

- notes any additions or deletions to your June plan
- highlights those activities most important to you over the summer; and
- reflects on how your preplanning your summer affected its outcome.

4. A READING RECORD of the author, title, and number of pages you have read
over the summer. READ AT LEAST 950 PAGES of print the size of most
Young Adult (YA) books written for grades 6-8.

[A well-researched listing of books beloved and recommended by your peer group and its teachers has been included in this mailing. An asterisk (*) in front of a title means at least three students highly recommended that other students read that book. Carefully read the Reading Guidelines and List for more detailed guidance. However, as stated in the Guidelines, feel free to select other appropriate reading materials which meet YOUR intellectual and creative needs.]

5. ONE READING-RELATED ACTIVITY. Suggestions are listed below and on the following page. Your ONE chosen activity should take about 3-5 hours to complete. You may choose a summer-long, TEACHER-DIRECTED activity listed, OR you may select a STUDENT-DIRECTED activity which you will be thinking about as you read over the summer, but which you probably will not create until you have finished your reading selections.

YOU SELECT the ONE type of activity which you feel best reflects YOUR intellectual, emotional, and creative needs!

ONE READING RELATED ACTIVITY IS REQUIRED – As stated above, this ONE activity may be either TEACHER OR STUDENT directed.


TEACHER-DIRECTED CHOICES: (Time involved: 3-5 hours)

1. Keep a “daily” REFLECTIVE journal on each day’s reading. Limit your thoughts, observations, and puzzlements to 2-3 sentences per entry.

OR

2. Keep a CORRESPONDENCE journal. After reading a book (or selections of poetry or non-fiction), write a letter to its author or to one of the main characters. Using PROPER correspondence format, focus on important issues raised in the “book” and reveal any thoughts, observations, or puzzlements that you would like to share with the author, poet, character, or reader of your journal. (Length: 2-5 paragraphs per book.)

OR

3. You may COMBINE Choices #1 and #2, if desired. For example, for one book you may wish to write daily, but for another book you might rather wait until you have completed the book to write a letter to its author or character.

If you chose any of the above three choices, make sure –
• You make specific references to the names of persons, places and specific conflicts within the novel read;
• Your JOURNAL is DATED FOR EACH ENTRY;
• You properly identify the AUTHOR, TITLE, and GENRE of book;
• You cite the number of pages in the book;
• Your entries or letters are easy to read.

STUDENT-DIRECTED ACTIVITY: (Time involved: 3-5 hours)

This type of activity is designed for RISK TAKERS. While reading over the summer, carefully monitor your OBSERVATIONS AND REFLECTIONS.

Using one or more of your readings as a jumping-off point or source of inspirations, CREATE YOUR OWN ACTIVITY which should reflect your CREATIVE SELF. Feel free to experiment and explore with any ONE or MORE of several mediums, such as . . .

• ORIGINAL WRITING (poetry, prose, script writing for stage, film, or video/TV)
• ORIGINAL ARTWORK (drawing, painting or sculpture and a short typed summary)
• ORIGINAL MUSIC (music and/or lyrics and a short typed summary)
• ORIGINAL MEDIA PRODUCTIONS (photography, slide presentation, video, film, etc. and a short typed summary)

CREATIVE WORK should be “displayed” in such a way that it is appropriate for a GENERAL AUDIENCE, that the QUALITY of the creation reflects PRIDE AND QUALITY, and that it can be “hung up” or showcased in the classroom. “Type” written work, whenever possible, mount or frame using a contrasting background. Attach to your project a short, typed explanation of what book(s) inspired its creation. Also include your name.

If you choose a STUDENT-DIRECTED activity, clearly LABEL your activity with your NAME AND GRADE and include a LISTING of this activity in your portfolio, so that your schoolmates and teachers are made aware that your activity may be found somewhere other than in your portfolio.

Whatever type of activity you choose, enjoy the opportunity to have the time to reflect on your readings and make them a part of your intellectual and creative “self”. Remember, the reading-related activity you choose to do should take no more than 3-5 hours to complete, but it should be done with great care. Your schoolmates and we staff members will be eager to meet each other in September and to view these portfolios. We truly are excited about our school and the outstanding qualities of our new students, like you. Have a thought-provoking summer, but do not forget to play and relax, too!

SUGGESTED SUMMER READING GUIDELINES AND LIST

The following SUGGESTED list of books is offered to you as a GUIDE in your selection of appropriate reading matter. FEEL FREE to select any OTHER reading material which you, your parents, or current teachers feel will challenge and pique your intellectual and creative abilities. However, if possible, try to vary the “type,” or genre, the level of difficulty, and the length of the reading selections you choose.

Most of the authors listed on the following pages have received the Newberry Medal, the Newberry Honor, and/or other prestigious literary awards for their beloved thought-provoking books.

The AUTHORS of these outstanding books are NOT LISTED ALPHABETICALLY but rather in the order of their books’ probable POPULARITY and/or ease of reading. The more ADVANCED reading selections are at the end of each thematic section.

INFORMATION about each book usually is listed in the FOLLOWING ORDER: author’s LAST NAME, FIRST NAME, TITLE of book, NUMBER OF PAGES in book, PUBLISHER, THEME/SETTING. For example: Smith, John THE RAVEN 107 Harper (escape/mountains) should be read to mean: John Smith = book’s author; The Raven = book’s title; 107 = book’s # of pages; Harper = book’s publisher; escape/mountains = theme/setting.

The name of the publisher has been cited to aid you in finding a desired book in a bookstore such as New England Book Fair in Newton where books are grouped by publisher. Most of the titles listed, however, can be found in neighborhood libraries.

BOTTOM LINE: Read until you find what appeals to you. Make reading a daily, enjoyable activity in your life!
