All students are to choose three of the following books assigned
to their grade. It is strongly recommended that students purchase
the books so that they can highlight important points and make notes
in the margins. Summer reading is an important component of the
curriculum. Guidelines for required complementary assignments are
on the reverse of this list. Please check www.saintclementhigh.org
for a brief description of each book.

Assignment:
Read three books,
making notes of difficult vocabulary words and
important characters in each book.
The following assignments
are due the first full week of school:
1. For each book,
compile a vocabulary list of 20 unfamiliar or
difficult words and their definitions. The list must contain the
sentence and page number from the book where the word appears.
2. For each book, compile a list of the main characters in
the book and a brief description of each.
Testing:
Students will be
tested on summer reading during the first full week of
classes. The tests will consist of critical essays or book reviews.
Students will need to be familiar with the plot, characters, and theme of
each book and will be allowed to use marked up copies of the books during
the exam.
Extra Credit:
Create a “Treasure
Chest” for each book. This will be a container
filled with articles representing the plot, characters, and theme
of the story.
Some articles a reader might include would be photos, posters, puzzles,
games, maps, or anything which will help picture what happened in
the book.
