June 2003

Dear Parents and Students:

We have selected the following list of books as summer reading for the children entering Grade 6. You are required to read four books and ten poems. After you read each selection, please record the title and the author on the Required Reading Book Log or Required Reading Poetry Log. Also, be sure to have your parents sign the logs after you read each book and poem.

Please read the following three required books:

Title Author Publisher Award
The Black Stallion Walter Farley Random House Classic
My Side of the Mountain Jean Craighead George Penguin/Putnam Newbery Honor
Lyddie Katherine Paterson Penguin/Putnam IRA-CBC Teacher's Choice

For your fourth book, you may select one of the books on the Recommended Reading List.

Read ten poems from the books on the Recommended Poetry Reading List. These do not have to be from ten different books.

You are also required to complete the three activities in this packet.

Activity 1: For the book Black Stallion, please complete the Creative Writing/Drawing Project.

Activity 2: After reading the book, My Side of the Mountain, watch the video and complete the Venn Diagram Project.

Activity 3: After reading your fourth book (own selection), please complete the Events Wheel Project.

In addition, when you return to school in the fall, you will have a test on the book, Lyddie.

On the first day of school, please bring your Book Log, Poetry Log and your three activities with you. We hope that you enjoy these excellent children's literature selections. Have a wonderful summer!
