Cathedral High School Summer Reading Lists 2004
2004

Dear Class of 2008,
The Cathedral High School, Inc. English Department would like to welcome you to our family. While the administration, faculty and staff hope that you enjoy your summer and find plenty of time for relaxation, we also hope that you spend time this summer preparing yourselves for the responsibilities and challenges that lie ahead.

In order to help prepare you for the year ahead, you are required to complete a summer reading and writing assignment. This year, you are expected to read Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid and complete a journal assignment as you read Kincaid's novel. The journal will be graded and included in your first quarter grade. It is crucial that you start the year well with this first assignment.

Thank you,
Mrs. Christol A. Murch
Principal

Freshman Summer Reading
Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid
Choose 4 of the following journal entries. Each entry must be at least half a page in length.

1. Chapter one: "Figure in the Distance"
How do you feel about Annie John's fascination with death? What did you find interesting about this first chapter? Describe some of your own reactions to or thoughts about death.

2. Chapter two: "The Circling Hand"
Pick one quote that describes Annie John's relationship with her mother. Write down the quote and explain how it describes their relationship. Then compare and contrast Annie John's relationship with her mother to your own relationship with your mother or guardian.

3. Chapter three: "Gwen"
Think back to your class last year. Compare and contrast the ways in which these girls behave to the ways in which you and your friends behaved. What was your role in the class? How did you choose your friends?

4. Chapter four: "The Red Girl"
Why do you think Annie John is keeping secrets? Describe a time when you kept a secret. Explain how you kept the secret and why.

5. Chapter five: "Columbus in Chains"
Think about the way that Annie John described Ruth. How do you think it must have felt for Ruth to be in the minority? Try to relate her experience to something in your own life.

6. Chapter six: "Somewhere, Belgium"
Describe a time when you felt so sad and depressed that you had something like a heavy "thimble" growing inside you.

7. Chapter six: "Somewhere, Belgium"
What did Annie John say to hurt her mother? Why do you think she said it even though she had just felt sad when the boys had made fun of her? Describe a time when you said something to hurt someone and felt sorry afterward.

8. Chapter six: "Somewhere, Belgium"
What do you think that Annie John would put in her own trunk? Explain why she would choose each item. Then make a list of the items that you would put in a trunk to represent your life. Explain what each item says about you.

9. Chapter seven: "The Long Rain"
What did you find most interesting about this chapter? Explain why it was interesting to you.

Required journal entry. It must be at least one page in length.

1. What part of the book made you think the most about your own life and the ways in which you have changed over the years? Explain in detail. Consider what you learned from the novel and the ways in which you agreed or disagreed with Annie John.
