Incoming Seventh Graders

Directions: Please choose a total of 3 books from the list below. Choose books that you think you will enjoy. After reading the books, answer the questions that follow in a notebook. Bring the notebook with you to school on the first day. Your answers to the questions are considered homework assignments and will be counted as such.

Non-fiction

  • The Amateur Astronomer: Experiments and Investigations by Fred Schaaf. For everyone interested in the constellations and planets. Lots of information and activities.


  • Across America on an Emigrant Train by Jim Murphy. Learn about families that traveled across the United States.


  • What I Had Was Singing: The Story of Marian Anderson. A biography of the world famous African-American contralto voice.


  • The Story of Negro League Baseball by William Brashler. Informative history of the Negro Leagues with lots of photographs.


  • Space Challenger: The Story of Guion Bluford by Jim Haskins and Kathleen Benson. Seven chapters that focus on the effects of slavery on world exploration.


  • Against All Opposition: Black Explorers in America. Seven chapters that focus on the effects of slavery on world exploration.

  • The Mexican American Family Album by Dorothy Hoobler and Thomas Hoobler. The Hooblers chronicle the generations of Mexicans that have come to this country from the 1800s to the present. Use of newspaper articles, photographs and quotes make this an interesting book.

  • I See Rhythm by Toyomi Igus. Paintings visualize the musical roots of African drums, and provide a time line of historical background for jazz, spirituals, ragtime and other types of music.


  • Promise Me the Moon by Joyce Annette Barnes. Teenagers Annie and Claude work to save a historic home, and in the process, learn about their heritage, parental sacrifice, and friendship.


  • April Morning by Howard Fast. Read about a boy's experiences as a soldier in the American Revolution.


  • A String in the Harp by Nancy Bond. Travel back in time along the coast of Wales to try to solve the mystery of the bard Taliesin.


  • The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. Kit Carson gets accused of witchcraft. Is it true? How does she try to prove her innocence during a time when all it took was a single accusation to seal your fate?


  • The Earth Under Sky Bear's Feet by Joseph Bruchac and Thomas Locker. Native American poems about the land.
