“DREAMER AND SHOWMAN: THE MAGICAL REALITY OF ALEXANDRE BENOIS” EXHIBITION AT
BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY OPENS DECEMBER 3
November 22, 2005
In its new exhibition, Dreamer and Showman: The Magical Reality of Alexandre Benois, the Boston Public Library pays homage to the extraordinary life and creative achievement of Alexandre Benois, a leading Russian theatrical stage and costume designer of the early twentieth century.
A painter and critic, theatrical designer and director, historian and curator, Alexandre Benois did it all.
The co-founder and early creative director of the original Ballets Russes, Benois helped create such revolutionary ballets as Petrouchka, for which he not only designed the costumes and scenery, but also authored the libretto with his colleague, Igor Stravinsky. Early in his career, Benois co-directed and designed productions, while also distinguishing himself as a pioneer of Russian art history. Later, as director of the Hermitage Painting Gallery, Benois played a vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of Imperial Russia. After immigrating to Paris in 1926, he continued designing for leading companies, such as the Opera de Paris, Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, La Scala and Covent Garden. It was in his years abroad that Benois wrote his colorful memoirs, opening a window into the world of pre-Revolutionary Russia.
This exhibition primarily presents the BPL’s extensive archive of original set, stage and costume designs, books, manuscripts, artifacts and other matter. Additional materials include artworks loaned by Benois’ family members. This show, which includes numerous items never before seen by scholars, aficionados of ballet and opera, or by the general public, is also the first exhibition in the United States devoted exclusively to Benois.
The curator, Anna Winestein, will host gallery talks at noon on December 16, 12:30 p.m. on December 31, 11 a.m. on January 28, and 12:30 p.m. on February 22.
A public symposium addressing Benois’ life and career will be led by scholars of Russian art, theater and dance on January 28, 2006. Like the exhibit, the symposium will be free and open to the public.
The Boston Public Library exhibition, Dreamer and Showman: The Magical Reality of Alexandre Benois opens to the public on December 3, 2005, and will remain on view throughout the third floor of the BPL’s historic McKim Building in Copley Square until February 28, 2006. Admission is free. All galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
