BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS FEDERAL GRANT TO SUPPLEMENT SERVICE TO CHINESE (Chinese Text )
November 15, 2005
A new federal grant will enable the Boston Public Library to expand its services to Chinese-speaking residents of Boston.
The $20,000 grant provides funds to purchase books and DVDs for children, teens and adults in the Chinese language. New programs in Chinese include book discussions, story hours, and a dial-a-story program. Special events will celebrate the Chinese New Year and Asian Pacific Heritage month.
The Community Languages grant was awarded by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
“The Boston Public Library prides itself on reaching out to all communities. We are thrilled to welcome residents whose primary language is Chinese, those who are of Chinese ancestry, and those with an interest in Chinese culture to take advantage of these expanded services,” Library President Bernard Margolis said.
The federal funds will be used to purchase popular Chinese titles including, winners of the Mao Dun Literature Award and Chinese translations of books from the Boston Public Schools summer reading lists.
Publicity about the grant projects will be available in English and Chinese and will appear in Chinese media outlets.
Under federal legislation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, through the Library Services and Technology Act of 1996, provides funds to state libraries using a population-based formula. State libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services; they may also distribute the funds through subgrant competitions or cooperative agreements to public, academic, research, school, and special libraries. Federal funds support primarily activities using technology for information sharing between libraries and other community services. It also funds programs making library resources more accessible to urban, rural, or low income residents, or others who have difficulty using library services.
