Civil War Film Series

The Boston Public Library presents a fifteen-part film series on Monday evenings which will include a range of significant films that reflect Hollywood's changing perspectives of prominent themes of the Civil War: slavery, emancipation, and the effect of the war on individuals and their families. The series will also reveal American society's generational shifts from the 1930s to the end of the century.

Buffalo SoldiersAugust 29
Buffalo Soldiers (1998, 95 minutes)
Directed by Charles Haid

Recruited from former slaves who migrated westward after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Buffalo Soldiers were cavalry who protected pioneers, captured outlaws, and fought both Indians and the racism of their commanders. Stars Danny Glover, Carl Lumbly, and Timothy Busfield.

 

Ride With the DevilSeptember 12

In a no-man's-land on the Missouri/Kansas border, a staunch loyalist, an immigrant's son, a freed slave, and a young widow form an unlikely friendship as they learn how to survive during the war. Starring Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, James Caviezel, Simon Baker, Jeffrey Wright, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ride with the Devil is based on Daniel Woodrell's story Woe to Live On.

A wounded Confederate soldier embarks on a perilous journey back home to Cold Mountain, N.C. Based on John Frazier's best-selling novel. Renee Zellweger was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ruby Thewes. Also starring Jude Law and Nicole Kidman.

 

 

The Last ConfederateSeptember 26

Directed by A. Blaine Miller and Julian Adams

In a story based on the life of Robert Adams, a determined Southern captain rallies his troops to fight for their land. Filled with passion, The Last Confederate depicts one man's fierce loyalty for his county and his deep love for his Northern sweetheart. Starring Julian Adams, Gwendolyn Edwards, and Mickey Rooney.
