BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY’S
PARKER HILL BRANCH EXPECTED TO RE-OPEN IN MARCH

January 25, 2005

The Boston Public Library is reporting good progress on the renovations of its Parker Hill branch, with a current projection of late March for the reopening.

Additional work, including the complete replacement of the floor tile, has required extending the amount of time the branch will be closed to the public. The branch was originally expected to reopen in January.

The Parker Hill branch had been closed to allow the installation of a handicapped ramp, new elevator and restrooms as well as other work inside and outside the building.

Work on the elevator is near completion and an inspection will follow. The branch and will re-open once the work is finished, cleaning is complete, and the building has been certified as ready for use by the public and staff.

The Parker Hill Branch of the Boston Public Library will then welcome staff and customers back to the newly renovated, more easily accessible facility.

Further schedule details will be forthcoming on the BPL website www.bpl.org, as well as in local newspapers.

The 73-year-old branch is located at 1497 Tremont Street in Roxbury.

Customers of the BPL’s Parker Hill branch have their choice of 26 other neighborhood branches to use for the duration of the closure.

For more than 150 years, the Boston Public Library has pioneered public library service in America with revolutionary ideas and famous firsts. Established in 1848, the BPL was the first publicly supported municipal library in America, the first public library to lend books, the first to have a branch library and the first to have a children’s room. Today, the BPL boasts 27 neighborhood branches, free Internet access, two unique restaurants, an award-winning website www.bpl.org and an on-line store featuring reproductions of the BPL’s priceless photographs and artwork. Each year, the BPL hosts nearly 5000 programs, answers more than one million reference questions and serves millions of people in its National Historic Landmark McKim Building in Copley Square. All of its programs and exhibits are free and open to the public. At the Boston Public Library, books are just the beginning!
