| The
teens of the Boston Mural Crew have hung two dozen larger-than-life
paintings inspired by the Boston Public Library’s famed John
Singer Sargent murals as they bring their work out of the studio
and onto the streets.
The murals in Sargent’s
Triumph of Religion series on the 3rd floor of the BPL’s McKim
Building are currently undergoing a conservation effort to restore
them to the brilliance and detail they had when they were painted
a century ago.
Inspired by the
conservation project, 13 artists from Boston high schools reproduced
sections of the BPL murals in dramatic close-up. Using detailed
photographs of the murals, the thirteen young artists began work
on the 5’ by 9’ canvasses in September.
The teen-created
paintings will decorate the library’s Boylston Street façade
for the Boston Public Library Foundation’s annual Spring Gala
to celebrate the restoration of the National Historic Landmark building
in Copley Square.
