Once Removed: Portuguese-American Poets of Azorean Descent –- Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. Three Portuguese-American writers will read and discuss their poetry. New Bedford native Nancy Vieira Couto, Fall River native Thomas J. Braga, and Provincetown native Frank X. Gaspar. On the Medical Frontlines: Richard Knox in Conversation with Doctors Without Borders—Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m., Rabb Lecture Hall (ext. 2212) Richard Knox, Health and Science Correspondent for National Public Radio, talks with four aid workers from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). They will discuss the challenges of reaching people caught in conflict, treating malnutrition, and responding to epidemics, and share how they have made working with MSF a part of their lives.

Boston & Beyond A Bird’s Eye View of New England – Through June 30. The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library marks the public debut of one of the world’s pre-eminent collections of bird’s eye views and celebrates its preservation through a Save America’s Treasures award. Bird’s eye views are a map that present an area as if it was being viewed from an elevation of 2,000 to 3,000 feet. To illuminate the process and intentions of the mapmakers for creating these unusual perspectives, the exhibit will include their diaries, field sketch notes, and manuscript drawings.
Ford Hall Forum 100 Years of Free Speech -- Through May 30, Chavannes Gallery (Ext. 2212.) An exhibit illustrating the rich history of the Ford Hall Forum, the oldest free public lecture series in the United States. Since its first public event in 1908, the Forum has hosted some of the most intriguing figures in our nation's modern history, including Maya Angelou, Noam Chomsky, Al Gore, Stephen Jay Gould, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Henry Kissinger, Ayn Rand, Eleanor Roosevelt, Cokie Roberts, and Malcolm X.
Choosing to Participate Facing History and Ourselves -- Through May 20. Choosing to Participate is an educational and civic initiative that challenges us to think deeply about what democracy really means—and what it asks of each of us. Created by Facing History and Ourselves, a global nonprofit educational organization, Choosing to Participate is a catalyst for conversation about how we treat each other, how we ought to, and what our choices mean. Champlain's America: New England and New France -- Through May 31 in the Cheverus Room. The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University, in partnership with the Boston Public Library, presents “Champlain’s America: New England and New France” as part of an international series of events commemorating the role of Frenchman Samuel de Champlain in the settlement of North America. Drawing on the variety of the John Carter Brown Library’s collections, the exhibit presents 85 items, including maps, drawings, engravings, manuscripts, and poetry from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Boston Printmakers: Celebrating 60 Years -- Through June 14, during library hours, in the Wiggin Gallery. In 1997, the Printmakers put their archive of prints on deposit at the Boston Public Library. Selections from that collection are on display.
Kids With Cameras: Beyond The Wall -- June 4 – July 31 in the Rabb Lobby. A portrait of Jerusalem through the eyes of Jewish and Palestinian kids. Sponsored by Zionist House / Israel Cultural Center and The Consulate General of Israel to New England.
American Posters of the First World War -- July 1-Aug. 31, in the Wiggin Gallery. More than 50 American World War I posters, from the BPL Print Department including posters of recruitment, patriotism, war bond promotions, the home front, and war relief organizations.
movingline – Aug. 5 – Nov. 30, Popular Reading Room. movingline, Drawings by Channing is the outcome of a seven-year exploration of the science and humanity of movement. With pencil, Channing captures nature's energy, beauty, and rhythms in a series of sixty drawings. In this extraordinary body of work, the intimacy of her art is initially represented by images of crashing waves, birds in flight, and racing horses. Her pursuit of motion then evolves into renditions of dancers and musicians performing, and complex portrayals of the human face.
