Boston Public Library President Amy Ryan Named Chair of Digital Public Library of America

ARBoston Public Library President Amy Ryan has been appointed Chair of the Board of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), a term which begins in July and is effective for two years. The Digital Public Library of America (dp.la) develops systems to share digital content from American libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and other community centers in a centralized, online environment. The DPLA offers a single point of access to millions of items—photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images, and more.

“Amy’s deep commitment to enabling access and discoverability of Boston’s cultural artifacts transcends across the state and country, and she will be a valuable resource as the Chair of the Digital Public Library of America,” said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “Her leadership and vision ensure our collective history will be preserved and utilized for learners of all ages.” (more…)

DPLA Board of Directors Appoints Amy Ryan as New Chair

DPLA_logo_squareThe nine-member Board of Directors of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) announced the appointment of Amy E. Ryan, President of the Boston Public Library, as its next chair, beginning in July 2015 and effective for two years. Ryan will succeed the current chair, John Palfrey, Head of School at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

As Board chair, Ryan will collaborate with Dan Cohen, DPLA’s Executive Director, and the rest of the Board of Directors to fulfill DPLA’s broad commitment to openness, inclusiveness, and access.

Digital Projects Manager Tom Blake Named to Library Journal’s “Movers & Shakers” List

tomBoston Public Library’s Digital Projects Manager Tom Blake was recently named one of Library Journal’s 2014 ”Movers & Shakers” alongside library industry professionals for their advancement of the field and commitment to their communities.  Blake has steadily grown the library’s Digital Services department since its creation in 2005, which today includes two state-of-the-art digitization studios and a digital repository, complete with the infrastructure and collaborative partnerships necessary to optimize access to its materials. The library’s Digital Services department is responsible for digitizing and providing online access to the library’s collections. The work is done at two state-of-the-art digitization labs, using high-end digital cameras and flatbed scanners, in the Central Library in Copley Square. The digitized collections can be found under the “online collections” tab of the BPL home page. The department works to not only increase awareness of and access to collections and materials but also to partner with local communities to help share their stories.

Digital Public Library of America and Internet Archive share vision to increase access

Partners250pxBoston Public Library (BPL) has two partners-in-residence at its Copley Square location that represent a continuing, collaborative commitment to expanding information access to all. The Internet Archive and Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) operate on the third floor of the BPL’s Johnson Building at 700 Boylston Street. The partners are located near Boston Public Library’s technical services team, enabling strategic proximity to the library’s digital resources.   (more…)
