How to Find Grants and Foundation Information

This guide is intended to help individuals or members of nonprofit organizations locate sources of funding. These materials are available at the Kirstein Business Branch, unless otherwise noted. Additional resources can be found at the Social Sciences Department at the Copley Square library. That department is a "cooperating collection" of the national Foundation Center and has a "core collection" as well as the FCSearch database (in-library use only).

Directories and Guidebooks

The Foundation Directory.Foundation Center, NY; (annual) (1st Floor, 20)  Provides extensive information on the finances and giving interests of over 10,000 U.S. foundations. One can locate foundations geographically; by the subject areas each foundation exists to support; and by the types of support they are able to provide. The Foundation Center (on the web at www.fdncenter.org), also offers free access to its online collection of nonprofit literature, statistical information on non-profits, and contact information on over 80,000 private & community foundations, with links to their IRS 990's.

Both sources provide contact information for the hundreds of federally managed programs who can provide assistance in the forms of grants, loans, scholarships, and training. Discover appropriate federal program by executive agency, by subject area, eligibility requirements or by basic function. The Catalog Of Federal Domestic Assistance (on the web at www.cfda.gov) is also available online, where it is updated more frequently.

Provides detailed descriptive profiles of over 1,000 of the top corporate charitable giving programs in the U.S. It includes information on program priorities; preferred types of giving; geographic giving preferences; application procedures and some aggregated statistics on the amounts given as well as recent recipients.

A great resource for locating funding sources solely interesting in covering operating costs - including salaries, rent, mortgage payments, utilities, etc. One can find appropriate foundations by state or by subject interest.

The "How To" Grants Manual, 5th ed.; David G. Bauer; Praeger Publishers; Westport, CT; c. 2003
2nd Floor; HG177. B38 This text provides the novice grant seeker a valuable overview of the process, with tips and practices from which even an experienced nonprofit could benefit. It includes preparation and organization methods; how to work with government, foundations and corporate funding sources; and recommendations for writing grant proposals.

Prospect Research: A Primer For Growing Nonprofits; Cecilia Hogan; Jones & Bartlett Publishers; Sudbury, MA; c. 2004
2nd Floor; HG177. H64 For nonprofits who wish to create their own contacts and prospects. This guide goes beyond some of the standard sources of funding and describes how a nonprofit could go about locating the more personalized contacts that can lead to donations and grants.

An electronic spin-off of their print directory of Massachusetts based charities, this database now includes smaller charities in both Massachusetts and the Greater Washington, D.C. area. Each entry includes a brief history of the charity, as well as its funding interests.
Guidestar--http://www.guidestar.org
A comprehensive database of nonprofit organizations, searchable by keyword, city or state. Each organization profiled includes their NTEE codes, 3 most recent IRS 990s, and contact info. . Register for free access to their information, all of which is collated from public documents, including the 990s. Paid subscribers to Guidestar get even more information, including sortable results with income data, and executive names.
