Tours
Monthly tours of the Kirstein Business Branch are offered the first Wednesday of every month at 9:30 am.
Space is limited-please register by phone (617-523-0860) or in person. Tours include
a guided walk-through of each floor by our librarians and a brief database demonstration.
Tours are free and generally last about an hour.
Tours are also available for groups, either general overviews or tours focused on particular business topics.
We can best accommodate groups on weekday mornings but will attempt to work with your schedule.

Join us for these free business workshops sponsored by the Kirstein Business
Branch and agencies in the Boston area. The workshops are held either at the
Kirstein Business Branch or the Central Library of the Boston Public Library

NEW AND ONGOING - "BUSINESS FRIDAYS" at KIRSTEIN!
The Kirstein Business Branch has partnered with SCORE BOSTON to bring you "Business Fridays".
A SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) counselor has been coming to Kirstein twice
a month and will now be here EVERY FRIDAY from 10-1 pm. Make a free one-hour appointment for
free with an experienced SCORE business counselor. Before or after your appointment,
you can look at Second Floor "Small Business" and "Business Statistics" collections
and get help from our knowledgeable business librarians. To register, sign-up on the

NEW AND ONGOING! JVS "CAREER WEDNESDAYS" at KIRSTEIN!
Are you hunting for a job or considering a career change? Jewish Vocational
Services (JVS) and Kirstein are cosponsoring "Ask the Career Experts", free
appointments with career counselors and employment coaches from Career
Moves at Jewish Vocational Services. Beginning February 13th and
continuing on the second Wednesday of each month, you can receive
customized advice at the Kirstein Business Branch about the job search
process, career exploration, resumes, networking and more! To make a
half-hour appointment between 10 am and 12 noon, please call Judy Bottkol at
JVS at 617-399-3162. "Ask the Career Experts" is provided in partnership with
Jewish Vocational Services of Boston, a non-sectarian organization that provides job search,
employment assistance, education, training, career development, business

COMING IN SPRING 2008!! How can I Afford Retirement? Investor Education at the Boston
Public Library (programs in this series are listed chronologically below and will
continue in Fall 2008). You can send an email to AffordRetirement@bpl.org with your name,

www.affordretirement.bpl.org in the coming months. This program is funded by a grant
from the Investor Protection Trust and is sponsored by the: Investor Protection Trust;
the Boston Public Library; the Massachusetts Securities Division and the Financial Planning
Association of New England. Programs will consist of a lecture, the chance to participate
in a small group and to sign up for a free one-on-one noncommercial appointment with a
financial planner. If you'd like to join the volunteer team of small group discussion

Finance your Small Business (Workshop) - Saturday, March 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the
Kirstein Business Branch. Learn how to prepare sample financial statements, the type that you will
need for your "Request for Loan Proposal" (loan request), business plan, and also to better manage
your business. This is your opportunity to expand your "business financial literacy" before
starting your business. Ask questions and hear the view of Neil Berdiev, author of Loan Financing
Guide for Small Business Owners, banker, and loan financing coach. Space is limited. To register,

Sales and Marketing Basics - Tuesday, March 25 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Rabb Lecture
Hall at the Central Library in Copley Square.
The Kirstein Business Branch and the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center Network
(UMass/Boston) present this workshop. So, you've already started your business, but nobody
is calling, and nobody is buying (or they aren't buying enough!). This 2.5-hour workshop provides
an overview and orientation to basic marketing concepts, strategies and tactics. You will learn
about developing marketing strategies, conducting research, establishing pricing, the meaning
of branding, distribution channels, advertising, public relations, and most importantly, ideas
for maximizing awareness and sales. This workshop is cosponsored by the Social Sciences Department.

Business Plan Research Workshop - Saturday, April 12 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Kirstein Business Branch.
Join us for a workshop to help you get the information you need to plan for your small business. We will
talk about sample business plans, identifying competitors, market research and ways to find statistics for

Getting Started in Business Workshop - Tuesday, May 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

information on business start-up issues, including marketing, financial management

Business Formation Workshop – For-Profit or Nonprofit? -Thursday, May 22
from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
at the Kirstein Business Branch. Interested in starting a business in your community but do
not know if your plan works well as a for-profit or nonprofit business? What is the
difference between for-profit and nonprofit anyway? Can I start a for-profit business
but still operate for the “public good”? Learn the difference in legal structure and
requirements between for-profit businesses and nonprofit organizations to make an informed
decision for your endeavors. Faith A. McClure Esq (PreventIt Law), an experienced
business / nonprofit organization law attorney, will lead a presentation and group
discussion to help you understand what you can and can not do through each type of
organization. This workshop is cosponsored by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
of the Boston Bar Association, the Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and
Homelessness, and the Kirstein Business Branch of Boston Public Library. To register,
