19th and 20th century photographs documenting Boston’s architecture and development as well as the daily life of the city. Photographs include street scenes, important buildings, harbor views and the park system. Photographers J.W. Black, Josiah J. Hawes, Nathaniel Stebbins, Thomas E. Marr and Baldwin Coolidge have significant holdings in the collection. Also included is an important series of photographs of the Boston Public School system by photographer A.H. Folsom taken in the early 1890s. The collection also includes non-photographic images including color lithographs, colonial and revolutionary era engravings and some documentary material.
