NORTHERN AVE.
BRIDGE AND THE U.S. CUSTOM APPRAISERS' STORES
Photograph by Leslie Jones - Early 1930s
Note: The U.S. Custom Appraisers' Stores
served not only as the main inspection and storage facility for goods, especially
suspicious goods, that came to Boston by sea, it also was a favorite vantage point for
Leslie Jones' photographs of the waterfront. Jones probably knew the superintendent of
every tall building in Boston by name and may well have helped them stock their liquor
cabinets on Christmas, in the name of good cheer and easy access. On the bridge slip of
the Northern Ave. Bridge stands the Boston Fire Department's Fireboat Station, with
fireboat at berth nearby.
