Rare Books Department
McKim Building, 3rd Floor
617-536-5400, ext. 2225

The staff in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department at the Boston Public Library comprises specialists in the history of printing and bibliography, experts in the analysis and recording of the printed or written word.

Such knowledge of bookmaking and its effects upon the transmission of ideas provides meaningful insights for the literary, political, or scientific historian.
In addition, the department is equipped with a modern conservation laboratory and a trained conservator.

It should be mentioned here that rare book librarians, in general, do not provide financial appraisals of books; that is considered the function of the antiquarian bookseller.
