CITY OF BOSTON

IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND TWELVE

ORDER FOR A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 10, 2012 AS “LIBRARY WORKERS DAY” IN THE CITY OF BOSTON IN RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION OF BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF

ORDER OF COUNCILOR STEPHEN J. MURPHY

WHEREAS: National Library Week is an annual celebration of the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers; and

WHEREAS: for more than 164 years, the Boston Public Library has provided excellent and invaluable service to users – free to all – regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background; and

WHEREAS: the staff of the Boston Public Library open the door of opportunity to knowledge in person and online, as well as personal service and expert assistance in finding what is needed when it is needed; and

WHEREAS: the staff of the Boston Public Library connect people with information, ideas, and experiences to provide enjoyment, enrich lives, and strengthen our community; and

WHEREAS: the staff of the Boston Public Library, across all neighborhood locations, delivers valuable service to the more than 3 million people who come through the doors and via the more than 7 million website visits the library receives; and

WHEREAS: it is important to recognize the unique contributions of all library workers along with the value of those contributions to individuals and society; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED: That the Boston City Council hereby formally proclaims, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 as “Library Workers Day” in the City of Boston and further urges Bostonians to recognize the staff of this treasured Boston institution and thank library workers for their exceptional contributions to Boston life.
