Cast your vote for the 2013 Teen Choice Book Awards

I am on a mailing list from Teenreads.com. (If you love teen books, you should get on their mailing list.) Teenreads.com has helped with choosing the finalists for Book Reporter‘s 6th Annual Children’s & Teen Choice Book Awards. You can help choose the finalists by voting at http://www.bookweekonline.com/voting/7-12. There are 5 books and 5 authors. You can choose a favorite illustrator but those are for children’s books but it may bring back good memories to you.

If you click on the Voting Home box on the top of the page it will bring you back to the main page of grade level choices. If you read to your little brothers, sisters or cousins, you might want to vote in those finalist sections.

Princeton Review Practice SAT Test on April 6, 2013 at the Central Library

It’s that time of year again when teens are getting prepared to take the SAT exam in either May or June. Princeton Review will be coming back to the Central Library this year to offer a practice SAT test on April 6, 2013, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The practice test will take place in the Mezzanine Conference Room.

Students will need to pre-register for this exam at www.princetonreview.com or at 800.447.0254.

Grove Hall Teen Choice Awards – Musicians

Teens who use the Grove Hall Library filled out a survey telling us their favorite musicians, actors, books, and video or computer games. Every day this week, we will vote to see who is your favorite in each category. Tune in Tuesday to vote for actors and actresses, Wednesday for video and computer games, Thursday for books, and Friday for musicians. Winners will be revealed on Saturday! Welcome to Teen Tech Week!

Teen Tech Week is a time to celebrate, learn more about and use tech resources in your library! Take a look at the different techie programs you can participate in this week.

It’s also a time for teen librarians to hear from teens about their current tech interests– anything from books about technology to video games you like to learning skills to be creative with technology. So, come talk to us– we really want to hear from you! Feel free to leave some suggestions in the comment section below, too.

And… if you want to beef up on tech history during the week, check out the blog This Day in Tech History, which gives you brief information on a significant piece of tech history for each day. Today, in 2008 (a really long time ago, right?) Hulu, the online video streaming website, was first launched. If you’ve got some other interesting tech facts, post them in the comments.

Planning for Summer Jobs

If you’re between the ages of 15 and 17 and are hoping to find a job this summer, this weekend is your last chance to apply for a Hopeline number! Hopeline applications must be completed by Sunday, March 3. Check out some of the great places where you can apply for summer jobs with your Hopeline number:

The New England Aquarium
Tenacity, the summer Tennis and Reading Program for Boston kids
The Boston Natural Areas Network Youth Conservation Corps
The 826 Boston creative writing center
Artists for Humanity
and of course, many Boston Public Library locations!

After you’ve finished your Hopeline application, head over to the ABCD Summerworks application! Summerworks provides jobs to young people between the ages of 14 and 21. Applications must be completed by March 15.

Remember, you can always stop by your local library for help filling out your application! Remember to bring all the necessary information with you and ask your local librarian for assistance.
