Soul Eaters, A Manga and Anime Series created by Atsushi Okubo – A Review

Posted on February 12th, 2013 by Anna in Teen Services

Soul Eaters is a hillarious manga and anime series that chronicles the adventures and tasks of three aspiring scythe carriers who are trainees at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (humans who can yield scythe weapons to destroy evil villains stalking Death City) and their partners, who can transform into  weapons for their meisters so they can acquire the 99 souls of evil beings and the soul of one witch to be accepted by Death himself to use their scythes to carry out his will.

The three main characters are a shy teenage girl named Maka Albern and her partner Soul Eater who has the ability to turn into a scythe as a weapon. The twist with this duo is that Maka is secretly attracted to Soul Eater and always becomes jealous or angry when Soul Eater doesn’t pay her any attention. Black Star is a young boy who likes to consider himself to be a silent and deadly assassin, yet always fails to be silent and fails in acquiring evil souls. His partner is Tsubaki who can transform into many different kinds of knifes and swords and continuously has to work with and handle Black Star’s outrageous tendencies to prove that he is the greatest assassin at the academy. And finally there is Death the Kid, who happens to be Death’s son. His partners are a pair of sisters, Liz and Patty Thompson, who can transform into pistols for Death the Kid. The only problem is that Death the Kid has an obsessive compulsive disorder where everything he sees and touches has to be correctly aligned or else he becomes too distracted to complete any of his missions for the academy and tends to leave the sister’s behind to complete the mission on their own.

I was introduced to this series by a few friends of mine and while I was watching the first episode and watched as Soul Eater litterally swallowed an evil red soul in the shape of a tear drop and then burped in Maka’s face after the two of them handily dealt the evil being its deathly blow, I knew this series was for me. There is intense fight scenes in each episode that are crossed with hillarious jokes and jabs at each character’s  quirks as their adventures unfold. I’ve only watched the first three episodes of the series but I already know I want to keeep learning more about these characters and the crazy academy they are a part of. The library has series 1-10 for the manga version of Soul Eater and has the whole collection in anime as well.

MattapAnime Host Club minutes / August 9, 2010

Posted on March 2nd, 2012 by ccheever@private.bpl.org in Events

The MattapAnime Host Club (formerly known as the Mattapan Manga and Anime Club) met today from 2-4. Here’s what we discussed:

We want to have a Cosplay Party!!! Sometime in late September of October looks best, we’ll be narrowing this soon.  Hopefully lots of people will come in costume as their favorite anime or manga character. Clayton’s going to look into the availability of a button machine to create buttons for the party / club. We also talked about creating ties that people could wear who don’t come in costume. Having FOOD is essential to the party. Everyone should be encouraged to bring a special Japanese treat. Najah already has a grooveshark playlist for the music!

MattapAnime Teen Host Club minutes for 8/30/2010

Posted on August 30th, 2010 by ccheever@private.bpl.org in Events

The MattapAnime Teen Host Club met today at its regular time – 2-4. The next meeting will be in two weeks on Monday, September 13th. Today we started planning for our first COSPLAY PARTY!!! (Don’t know what Cosplay is? This is a decent article to help you out). We hope to have it on Tuesday, October 19th from 2-5. We want to have food & drink, music, and entertainment.

  • For Food and Drink, Cris said she’ll be drafting her sister Rebeca to make these cool rice crispie vampire creations. Najah volunteered to make vegetarian sushi. Cris is planning on making edible broomsticks. Clayton’s going to take a trip to a large Asian Supermarket and bring Pokey and whatever other cool Japanese treats he can find. He’ll also be getting drinks (soda, juice, water), napkins, chips, and chop sticks.
  • For Music, Najah’s going to create some playlists on Groove Shark and share them with us. We’ll then figure the best way to get some CDs to play on the library’s CD player.
  • For entertainment, we HAVE to play some Anime. Bleach was suggested. We’ll decide later exactly what we’ll watch. We talked about having chopsticks and something small that would challenge people to improve their chopstick skills – you can only eat what you can pick up with the chopsticks. Clayton’s going to look into getting different colors of playdough so we can make pretend playdough sushi. He’s also going to look into getting supplies to make candy sushi. We also talked about how fun it would be to have a trophy (maybe made of candy sushi?) for best costume.

If you’ve never read Death note & xxholic, everyone really thinks you should! Also, WATCH LUCKY STAR!!!

Another book was also recommended (but its not manga): How Starbucks Saved My Life.

Some awesome sketches were done for a club logo. I’m going to photograph them and upload them soon!

Mattapan Teen Anime/Manga Club notes

Posted on June 7th, 2010 by ccheever@private.bpl.org in Books, Resources, Reviews - Teens

The Mattapan Teen Anime/Manga club met again today in the Movie/Gaming room. Here are some notes on the meeting:

Last meeting we discussed a bunch of festivals and trips members would like to do. Today there was some brainstorming about ways to fund these programs, and we also thought of some additional cool things to do.  Ideas thought up included:

  • Design customized T-shirts (and possibly sell them)
  • Have an art showing of work from club members
  • Get sponsorship of somekind from within BPL
  • Host a game day
  • Prepare and market teen specialist led Anime/Manga presentations to other libraries, schools, and clubs
  • Partner with the Friends of the Mattapan Branch – give them some labor in exchange for some fiscal support

There was a lot of talk about food and it was decided to have a special party at the July 12 meeting (that will include food). We’ll plan the party at our next meeting, June 21.

Some Anime titles were discussed and there was a fair amount of interest in the following: School Rumble (wondering if there is a third season – there isn’t, just a couple episodes past the second season – see this well notated article for details); Medabots; and Sailor Moon. There was also general agreement that it would be really cool if Kingdom Hearts was animated.

We had a discussion of the top Manga Titles that are still being published that library’s should make sure to get every new issue. Here’s the list that was created as a result of that conversation:

  • Naruto
  • Bleach
  • One Peace
  • Hitman Reborn
  • Full Metal Alchemist
  • Air Gear
  • Keshi (?)
  • Sara No Otsumo (?)
  • Fairy Tail
  • Ultimo

The meeting then had fun watching Soul Eater.  See everyone on June 21st at the next meeting!

The Mattapan Teen Anime and Manga Club, which meets every other Monday in the teen movie/game room, met today and came up with some great ideas of things to do in the future. All teens interested should come to the next meeting on Monday, June 7th from 2-4.

Things the club would like to do in the future:

  • Go on trips to Museums, like the MFA, the Science Museum, and the ICA
  • Go to Cons like Anime Boston and the JUMP festival
  • Conduct a Cosplay workshop and teach each other how to make cool costumes of our favorite characters
  • Bring in a Japanese Speaker and have a language workshop
  • Have a manga/graphic novel storytelling workshop
  • Have an Otaku workshop and share the wide world of Anime & Manga with everyone and increase everyone’s awareness of just how much cool stuff is out there
  • Have an art exhibition of locally created art

The second half of every club meeting is dedicated to watching anime. Today we discussed our favorites and agreed that a goal for future meetings will be to watch an episode or two from as many as possible. We want to provide exposure to new stuff that people are into, so people can decide for themselves if they want to watch more on their own time. Here’s the list of favorites from today’s group:

  • Ghost in the Shell
  • FLCL
