We welcome teens aged 12-18 to learn how to knit in this weekly one hour workshop on basic knitting.

The workshop will take place in the Central Library Teen Room from 3pm-4pm each of the three days.

January 8th: You’ll learn the most basic knitting stitch there is: the knit stitch.

January 15th: We’ll continue working on the knit stitch and then we’ll go over how to finish a project, otherwise known as casting-off.

January 29th: You’ve learned to knit, and cast-off, now we’ll learn the hard part: starting a project, known as casting-on.

Students will be given a ball of yarn and a pair of needles for the workshop. Those who wish to continue knitting at home should bring their own size nine needles.

But wait… knitting is for guys too!

Death – A Teen Poem

Posted on April 25th, 2012 by Anna in Events, Programs

This is a black out poem written by Anonymous from one of our poetry workshops last week.

“DEATH”

THE CRIME,

IN FULL BLOOM,

HERE,

ON A SLOPE DESCENDING,

LUCIEN CARR

BURIED A KNIFE

IN THE HEART

OF HIS BESOTTED STALKER.

CHARACTERIZED AS MUSE,

BUT MORE THAN THAT.

CAPTIVATED BY CARR’S PROFANE RANTS

ABOUT THE PATH TO TRANSCENDENCE

THROUGH PURE CREATIVE EXPRESSION

HIS “NEW VISION”.

College Essay Workshop @ Mattapan

Posted on January 5th, 2012 by bplteenblog in Events

Are you having trouble finishing your college essay? Do you need another pair of eyes to edit what you’ve written? We will be holding two workshops at the Mattapan branch.

Please bring either a print out of your essay or upload your essay on to GoogleDocs. You will need a Gmail account in order to use GoogleDocs; it is recommended that you create an account before coming to the workshops as we will be using GoogleDocs to write the essays.

What’s GoogleDocs? It’s a word processor but unlike the ones you use at home or school the information you enter is kept in what is called “the cloud” so you can retrieve your essay from any computer without having to save it on to a flash drive or on to the computer.  Still confused? Just ask the Teen Librarian for help.

The workshops will be offered on:

January 19, 2012 5:oo – 8:00PM

January 26, 2012 5:00 – 8:00PM

Knitting in the Teen Room … on TV!

Posted on September 16th, 2011 by Anna in Events

Hey all,

For those of you interested in our knitting workshop, or just want a peek into the cool times spent in the Teen Room at the Central Branch of the Boston Public Library, you can catch a 12 minute clip of the workshop we had here two weeks ago on TV!

That’s right. If you have Comcast the clip will be on channel 9 and if you have RCN it will be on channel 15. What time, you ask? Here’s the schedule:

September 21st @ 8:30pm

September 23rd @ 4:30pm

September 25th @ 7:00am

And if you were a part of that workshop tell all your friends and family you’ll be on TV… three times! How sweet is that?

Newspaper Blackout Workshop Tomorrow!

Posted on January 31st, 2011 by Anna in Books, Events

Hey guys! Guess what?

Tomorrow we’re having our first of two Newspaper Blackout Workshops!

It starts at 3:30pm in the Copley Teen Room.

What is Newspaper Blackout? It’s a really cool, ultra fun way to create poetry and even extremely short stories! All you need are a newspaper and a black marker, both of which are provided by the library. Come learn how to blackout a paper and write poetry while you do it!

The newspaper used to be boring old news day in and day out. Who wants to read that? Now the paper is fun!

This workshop is based on the book Newspaper Blackout by Austin Kleon.

The second workshop will be on February 16th at 3:30pm.
