The Social Sciences and Government Information Department collects publications from the city of Boston, Massachusetts, and federal government agencies.

The department has made available an extensive collection of Boston Redevelopment Authority materials invaluable in researching changes in the city’s infrastructure over the last five decades. Approximately 4000 of the 5,000 titles in this collection have already been digitized. Please search the library’s catalog or talk with staff about this resource.

The library participates in the Federal Depository Library Program, which guarantees free access to federal government information at 1200 libraries across the country.  There are twenty-eight depository libraries located throughout Massachusetts. The library’s collection is one of the largest in the country, containing more than three million federal publications in all formats including print, microform, and electronic.

Boston Public Library is also a Patent and Trademark Resource Center. For more information, see our Patent and Trademark Information pages.
