A donation to the BPL helps us to bring our collections to life through lectures, author talks, children's literacy programs, teen tech courses, senior programming, and more. It also supports preservation and digitization of our extensive and invaluable special collections. There are many ways to donate to the BPL.
Supporting the Boston Public Library
Thank you for your interest in supporting the Boston Public Library! A donation to the BPL helps bring our collections to life through high-impact programs in areas like author talks, children’s literacy, teen tech, job skills, senior activities, and much, much more. It also supports investments in cutting edge technology for our patrons to use, and the preservation and digitization of our extensive, museum quality collections.
Last year (2018) alone, the Library circulated more than 5 million objects, offered more than 1.6 million book and audiobook downloads, and provided 13,000 educational programs. Your support helps us continue this important work.
Fund for the Boston Public Library
Engraved over the entrance to the Central Library in Copley Square are the words “Free to All.” We take seriously this mission to provide education and enrichment free to all through our collections, services, programs, and spaces.
The Fund for the Boston Public Library was launched in April 2019 to support and strengthen these efforts. The Fund provides the public with a way to invest in the Library’s mission and to help preserve one of Boston’s – and the world’s – premiere public libraries and cultural institutions.

IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts
The IRA charitable rollover is a great way to make a tax-free gift to the Boston Public Library using your qualified retirement plan. The IRA Charitable Transfer allows individuals age 70½ and older to make direct transfers totaling up to $100,000 per year to 501(c)(3) charities, without having to count the transfers as income for federal income tax purposes. No charitable deduction may be taken, but distributions will qualify for all or part of the IRA owners required minimum distributions.
Donate to Our Affiliates
The Citywide Friends of the Boston Public Library were founded to promote public awareness of the entire Boston Public Library system and its resources, to further appreciation of the value of the Library as a cultural and educational asset, to support and link the activities of the Friends groups at the BPL’s branches, and to encourage volunteers to assist the Library.
