Dan Wasserman is an American political cartoonist for The Boston Globe and The Tribune Syndicate for 40 years. Since his retirement in 2021, he has turned to drawing strangers instead. His artwork is a mix of his exploration of watercolor and figure drawing. Two years ago, he founded Drawing is Free, an online group organized by Paris-based art professor Chloe Briggs, in which artists gather weekly on Zoom and take turns posing, each track lasting no longer than a single song track.
The Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library is thrilled to host the Face to Face art exhibition of Wasserman’s work. Face to Face is the current exhibition of the 2026 rotating art series. Face to Face brings together spontaneous watercolor portraits from Drawing is Free. Wasserman is after a first impression of what each subject reveals to him.
The Face to Face exhibition is on view until November 11, 2026. The Jamaica Plain Branch is open Monday-Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Thursday 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.

History
The Jamaica Plain Branch began in June 1876 as a small reading room in Curtis Hall with books supplied by the Roxbury Branch. Since then, it evolved into the very first BPL branch to purchase books using public funds. It is also the city’s first purpose-built branch library structure. The branch closed in August of 2015 to undergo a $10 million expansion and renovation project. The updated branch opened in May of 2017 with new features such as increased community space, dedicated teen and children's areas, and computer access while still maintaining its historic character.
