Outside with the Kids!

Now that summer is upon us and the kids are out of school, we start to think about taking them outside for summer fun and to explore nature. Your child may enjoy a trip to the playground.  The City of Boston has plenty of playgrounds and parks for an afternoon of outdoor play.  The Boston Public Library has a wide range of materials to help you find fun, educational activities for your child.  Born to be Wild by Hattie Garlick is a good place to start.  You may also wish to download the eBook Learning Outdoors with the Meek Family with your BPL card or eCard.  For more ideas, click here for materials available at the BPL.

Safety is a key consideration when taking your children outside, so here are a few resources to help you keep your family safe:

  • “Safe Kids” from the National Safety Council provides safety tips by age and by type of risk.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also offers safety tips for the summer at “Make Summer Safe for Kids.”
  • The Nemours Foundation offers safety tips as well as first-aid information on the Kids Health site.
