Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I join the press list and receive more information about the BPL?

A: Please email news@bpl.org to request your addition to the press list and subscribe to the BPL’s monthly e-newsletter online.

Q: How do I obtain images of the Central Library, branches, works in current exhibitions, and collections?

A:  Searchable images of the library’s collections can be viewed via Digital Commonwealth. Requests for high resolution images may be sent to the contact email of the department from where the original item is kept (e.g., Print Department) or digital@bpl.org. Permissions and terms of use for the images can be determined by clicking through to the Creative Commons license (e.g., some rights reserved) that has been applied to each image under the “Additional Info” section on each image page.

Other questions about images for media purposes can be directed to the Communications Office via news@bpl.org.

Q: What is the BPL photography policy?

A: Please observe the following:

  1. Refrain from the use of flash equipment in reading rooms and other areas in which it might disturb library users.
  2. Equipment such as tripods may not obstruct passageways or cause disturbances to library users.
  3. Photographing and/or filming and/or audio recording of members of the public, members of the library staff on duty, and public programs (unless permission has been granted in advance by the Library) are prohibited.
  4. Subject to the library’s Policies and Procedures for Private Events and Private Event Pricing, library buildings may be used as a setting for creative film or photographs intended for commercial purposes. Such permission must be secured in advance by contacting the Library Events Office at 617.859.2212 or events@bpl.org.

Q: How do I schedule an interview for an article or general story?

A: Please contact the BPL Communications Office at news@bpl.org or call 617.859.2319.

Q: As a member of the media, may I view exhibitions ahead of the public?

A: We can accommodate special requests for viewing during off-hours on a case-by-case basis. Please inform the Communications Office if you would like the curator of the exhibition to be present. Please contact news@bpl.org or call 617.859.2319.

Q: Do you have parking/where may I park my media van?
A: The best place to park is on Boylston Street and for media to work with the City’s Transportation Department to secure spots. The platforms and sidewalks around the Central Library are not recommended for parking.
